Overview

A rivet nut (insert nut) gives a strong, reusable thread in sheet metal, tube or plastic that is too thin to tap. It is fitted from one side with a hand or pneumatic tool. The wide flat head spreads the load and covers slightly oversized holes. The half-hex body sits in a hexagonal hole, so the nut cannot turn when the bolt is tightened. Also made with a closed end: the closed end seals the thread against water, dust and paint, and protects parts behind the panel. Pick the end in the size list.

Available in M4×0.7, M5×0.8, M6×1.0, M8×1.25, M10×1.5, M12×1.75, 6-32UNC, 8-32UNC, 10-24UNC, 10-32UNF, 1/4-20UNC, 5/16-18UNC, 3/8-16UNC, 1/2-13UNC with grip ranges from 0.5 mm to 8.9 mm. Each part number covers a set range of sheet thickness and has its own overall length (L), shown in the table. Dimensions follow the supplier catalogue (YLB 2025).

Material: C = Carbon steel. Part number = SG + type + grade (01 carbon steel, 02 aluminium, 034 stainless steel SS 304) + end (OE open, CE closed) + thread + length + grip range. Example: SGFK01OEM6150525 = flat head knurled, carbon steel, open end, M6, length 15, grip 0.5–2.5 mm.

How it works

A rivet nut gives a strong, reusable thread in sheet metal, tube or plastic that is too thin to tap, and it is fitted from one side only. Here is how this nut goes in.

1 Make the holeDrill or punch a hexagonal holeto the size in the table. Noaccess to the back is needed.2 Insert the nutPush the nut in until the headsits on the sheet.3 Set itThe tool pulls the thread up:the thin wall behind the sheetfolds into a tight collar andclamps.4 FastenScrew in the bolt to fix thepart. The thread can be usedagain and again.
Installation in four steps (simplified illustration).
no spin

Half-hex body

Hexagonal under the head, round at the threaded end. It locks in a hex hole like a full-hex nut, and the round lower part folds evenly into a strong collar.

thin sheetthick sheet

Choosing the grip

Each part number sets in a range of sheet thickness (the grip). Pick the part whose grip covers your sheet: too thin and the collar will not clamp, too thick and the nut cannot fold. The hole size is in the table.

Open or closed end

Open end: the thread runs right through, so a longer bolt can pass. Closed end: the end is sealed, keeping water, dust and paint out of the thread and protecting parts behind the panel. Pick the end in the size list above.

Head

Flat head: a wide head that spreads the load and covers the hole edge.

Setting tools

Set with a hand, pneumatic-hydraulic or battery tool fitted with the matching mandrel. See our riveting tools.
